Running Server Giveaways
A step-by-step guide to running a giveaway with a role reward, entry restrictions, and how the live entry count actually works.
How Giveaways work
Members enter by clicking a button on the giveaway message, not by reacting, and the bot picks winners automatically when it ends. Once it's posted, there's nothing left to do by hand.
See the full referenceExample: create a simple giveaway
Create Giveaway opens five tabs. Fill in Basics first:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Prize | Discord Nitro |
| Channel | #giveaways |
| Number of Winners | 1 |
| End Time | 3 days from now |
| Button Label | Enter |
Then switch to Message. A ready-made embed is already filled in, so you can keep it or personalize it with variables:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Embed Title | 🎉 {price} 🎉 |
| Embed Description | Click the button below to enter this giveaway! We will chose **{winners}** winners, good luck to everyone. |
The giveaway message and embed support tokens describing the giveaway itself, not the member:
{price}the prize{host_name}the host's username{host_id}the host's raw Discord user ID{relative_end}a relative countdown, e.g. "in 3 days"{end_date}the absolute end date and time{winners}the number of winners{entries}the current entry count
Example: reward winners with a role
Switch to the Rewards tab to hand out more than just bragging rights:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Winner Role | @Giveaway Winner |
| Winner Level XP | 500 |
| Winner Announcement Channel | Left blank (posts in #giveaways) |
Every winner gets the role added automatically the moment the giveaway ends, on top of the bonus XP and the announcement.
What locks after creation
Entry requirements and the live count
Options and Restrictions round out how members enter:
- Blacklisted Roles and Whitelisted Roles are mutually exclusive. Block specific roles, or limit entry to specific ones.
- Require Captcha adds a simple anti-bot check before someone can enter.
- Hide Entry Count removes the number from the button entirely, if you'd rather not show it.
Ending a giveaway
You're ready to run your first giveaway
Start with a short, simple giveaway to see the entry button and winner flow, then add a role reward, restrictions, or a captcha once you're comfortable. Free servers can run up to 5 at once, Premium up to 500.
